Israeli forces killed a senior Islamic Jihad commander in the Gaza Strip early Tuesday morning, Israel’s army said.
Baha Abu al-Atta, a senior commander with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, was killed in an attack at his house in Gaza’s Shejaiya district.district
At least two other people — a woman and a man — were also killed in the attack, according to Gaza medical officials.
The operation was authorized by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the army said.
The Islamic Jihad vowed to take revenge after the commander’s death.
An emergency situation was declared in southern Israel near the border with Gaza for fear of counter-attacks. Schools were closed and all trains in the area were suspended.
