Seventeen people have been taken to hospital after a car ploughed into a crowd during a car “cruising” event.

A 16-year-old girl was seriously injured after the vehicle reportedly mounted the kerb and hit the group in a car park in Tavistock Road, Plymouth.

Police said they were called to a “large gathering of vehicles and people” at about 22:00 BST on Saturday.

They added that a man had been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Car cruising usually involves groups of people gathering in car parks to watch drivers speeding, driving in convoy, racing other vehicles and performing stunts – sometimes involving hundreds of vehicles.

In many areas across the UK, injunctions have been imposed, making such gatherings illegal.

‘Everybody ran’

One spectator told the Plymouth Herald there had been children in prams and families among the crowd.

The paper said that when the crash happened, “there was screaming and everybody ran over to see whether they could help”.

After the crash, several ambulance crews, police officers and an off-duty firefighter helped those who were injured.

The other 16 people who were hurt are believed to have minor injuries, the police said.
