Froome all but wins Tour de France

Chris Froome all but secured his second Tour de France title as Thibaut Pinot won the penultimate stage of the race.

The Briton holds a one minute 12 second advantage going into Sunday’s largely processional stage in Paris.

Froome led closest rival Nairo Quintana by two minutes, 38 seconds before Saturday’s stage but he was unable to keep pace with the Colombian on the final climb of the race up Alpe d’Huez.

However, he finished 80 seconds back, close enough to keep the lead.

Quintana brilliantly navigated the 13.9km ascent of Alpe d’Huez – including its 21 hairpin turns – attacking with around 9km remaining to set up an exciting finish to the decisive stage.

As Pinot – who finished third overall in 2014 – pulled clear for his first stage win of this year’s race, Quintana chased hard to finish second.

Though Froome lost the support of team-mate Richie Porte late on, he battled to cross the line and was embraced by Team Sky boss Sir Dave Brailsford.

More to follow.
