Inbee wins seventh major at Turnberry

Inbee Park claimed her seventh major title after seeing off the challenge of fellow South Korean Ko Jin-young to win the Women’s British Open at Turnberry.

The world number one shot seven birdies and an eagle during a seven-under round of 65 – a joint course record.

This gave her a three-shot victory over 20-year-old Ko, whose debut major ended with a 71 to leave her nine under.

England’s Melissa Reid, 27, and Wales’ Amy Boulden, 22, tied for ninth on four under, after 71 and 72 respectively.

Ryu So-yeon, 25, continued the South Korean dominance of the event with a stellar back nine that comprised four birdies to give her a four-under 68 and a tie for third along with 18-year-old world number two Lydia Ko (69), who represents New Zealand but was born in Seoul.

Inbee, who has now won six of the last 14 majors, is three shy of Annika Sorenstam’s modern-day record tally of 10.

“It feels great, this is something I have been dreaming of all my life,” Inbee told BBC Sport. “I finally reached my goal. It’s just a relief. I’m so happy with everything.

“I didn’t feel that confident before this week, but to overcome a lot of things to win this championship is phenomenal.

“When I play majors and see myself on the leaderboard it gives me a lot of confidence. Holding another major trophy is a confidence boost and is a big key to my success.

“I can’t really say what the next goal is because this is the one I set for my career. There are a lot of legendary players I should look up to. For now I should relax and enjoy this moment.”

She also praised compatriot Ko, who is represented by the same management company as the world number one.

“Ko Jin-young is a very talented girl and I didn’t know I would be able to win on 12 under,” added Inbee. “All four days she has been fantastic. I know her well, I even had dinner with her this week. The golfing gods were on my side.”

It was another day of testing conditions at Turnberry, with wind and rain posing problems for players.

Norway’s Suzann Pettersen, 34, who was second overnight, was let down by her putting and carded a 72 to finish fifth on seven under, a shot ahead of joint overnight leader 27-year-old Teresa Lu (74) of Chinese Taipei.

Sweden’s 2009 PGA Championship winner Anna Nordqvist, 28, birdied three of the last five holes to finish five under, along with 25-year-old Japanese player Mika Miyazato (73).

Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen took advantage of the more beneficial morning conditions to card a seven-under 65, the joint best of the tournament with Kim Jyo-hoo’s first-round score, to finish one under.

Hannah Burke, 27, of England carded a one-under 71 to finish level along with American Stacy Lewis, 30, who won this event in 2013, and also shot a 71 on Sunday.

England’s Charley Hull, 19, enjoyed a good day, breaking 70 for the first time in the tournament with a three-under 69 to finish four over and joint 31st.
